New Year, New Skin – Benefits of a Chemical Peel

The new look for 2015 is clear skin! This goal may be achieved in the form of a chemical peel treatment available at Advanced Dermatology and Laser Institute of Seattle. Improve the tone, texture, and overall health of your skin with a convenient, in-office treatment. Where other skincare options fail to yield results, patients at Advanced Dermatology have observed dramatic improvement in the quality of their skin only days following their first chemical peel procedure.

What does a chemical peel do for your skin?

  • Relaxes fine lines caused by age and sun damage
  • Evens the appearance of mild acne scars
  • Treats acne
  • Increases skin cell turnover to unveil softer, younger looking skin
  • Decreases activity of the sebaceous glands responsible for secreting oil to the skin
  • Diminishes the appearance of hyperpigmentation (i.e. melasma), freckles, and age spots
  • Exfoliates rough and uneven skin texture
  • Shrinks enlarged pores

What should you expect from a chemical peel?

During the application process of the peel, it is quite normal to experience a mild tingling sensation. This feeling subsides due to a cooling unit directed at the site of treatment. One of our most popular peels “the VI peel” consists of five acids: Salicylic acid for exfoliation, Trichloracetic acid for collagen stimulation and scar repair, Retinoic acid to battle wrinkles, Vitamin C for its antioxidant properties, and finally Phenolic acid to reach deep skin penetration. Following the completion of the peel, a protectant product is applied.

Your skin may feel particularly tight on the first and second day of the peel. Any previous skin discolorations are much more pronounced at this stage (i.e. dark spots). Visible peeling will take place on the third day and gradually become more extensive as the peel progresses to completion at the seven day mark. It is highly advised that you do not pick or peel your skin as this may result in scarring. A moisturizer will be recommended by your dermatologist to keep the peeling under control. For optimum results, stay on a regimen of chemical peels every one to two months in conjunction with your at-home skincare routine. Chemical peels are not for every skin type. A board-certified dermatologist, like Dr. Steven Greene of Advanced Dermatology and Laser Institute of Seattle, is highly trained to evaluate your skin beforehand for appropriate guiding.
