What are the Best Treatments for Facial Volume Loss?

Beauty,Face,Skin,Woman,Beautiful,Eyes,And,Lips,Tanned,Skin
As we age, the substances in our skin that help produce a soft, full, and smooth appearance begin to diminish. Over time, this allows for a loss of volume in the face, resulting in issues such as sagging cheeks, droopy jowls, sunken eye sockets, and hollow temples. Fortunately, while these are expected consequences of aging and an inevitable outcome of facial volume loss, safe and effective treatments are readily available.

Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers offer the best solution for restoring lost volume to the face. However, the type of filler that will work best for your specific needs depends on several unique factors. During your initial consultation with one of our cosmetic dermatologists, we will carefully evaluate your problem areas and help you decide on the right filler for your concerns.

At the Advanced Dermatology and Laser Institute of Seattle, we offer a range of safe and effective dermal fillers. Some of our most popular include:

  • Hyaluronic Acid Fillers. Fillers from JUVÉDERM®, Restylane®, and Belotero Balance® contain hyaluronic acid (HA), which helps the skin retain moisture. These fillers restore lost HA to improve facial volume and create a softer, more youthful appearance for up to 18 months
  • Poly-L-Lactic Acid Fillers. Sculptra® contains poly-L-lactic acid, a collagen stimulator. Collagen is a structural protein responsible for skin elasticity and strength. Like HA, collagen diminishes as we age. Stimulating collagen production helps to restore lost volume for up to two years
  • Calcium Hydroxylapatite Fillers. The active ingredient in Radiesse® is calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA). CaHA stimulates the production of collagen and elastin to restore lost volume to the face. CaHA fillers can produce results for 15 or more months

Can I Be Too Old for Fillers?

An older woman wearing white cropped pants and a knitted poncho sites on the beach at sunrise and smilesYou’re never too old for fillers! These non-surgical injectable treatments provide a wide array of rejuvenation and enhancement benefits for people of diverse ages. Whether you want to plump your lips, smooth out wrinkles, rejuvenate aging hands, or have some other goal – dermal fillers could very well be the right option!

There is no upper age limit at which dermal fillers are ill-advised. Instead, you should work with an experienced injector who understands facial anatomy, the aging face, and what fillers can and cannot do. Our practice features our board-certified dermatologist Dr. Steven Greene. Once we examine your face and understand your goals, we will make customized recommendations for treatment.

Dermal fillers can in fact be well-suited to people in their 50s, 60s, and beyond. Fillers:

  • Augment and define thinning lips
  • Fill and smooth deep wrinkles
  • Soften the appearance of dark circles under the eyes
  • Fill in the lost volume that creates a sunken tear trough and under-eye hollows
  • Rejuvenate aging hands that have lost volume

Age causes a natural depletion of the volume beneath our skin. The natural loss of facial fat changes your facial shape and the smoothness of your skin. Your skin will get thinner as well. The result of all of this is that your face develops wrinkles and creases, the lips thin out and droop, the cheeks descend, and hollows and shadows may form across your face.

Dermal fillers like Juvederm and Restylane are really good at restoring lost volume and defining contours. Made from hyaluronic acid, poly-L-lactic acid, calcium hydroxylapatite, or another substance, dermal fillers provide scaffolding to keep your skin firm, youthful, and smooth. Depending on the type of filler, the results last between several months to a couple of years. For many of the dermal fillers at our practice, the results are immediate! Plus there’s little to no downtime, making it possible to get back to your normal activities right away.

Plump Your Pout with Lip Fillers in Seattle

Close up of a woman's full, plump lips after lip filler injections
If your lips are on the thinner side, whether due to age or genetics, you can plump them up with lip fillers. Unlike plumping lip glosses that may give you a tiny, temporary boost, lip fillers will give you dramatic, lasting results.

Fillers are considered the best way to plump up the lips because they’re longer-lasting than any topical product and much less invasive (and often give better results) than surgical lip implants. If you’re interested in volumizing your lips, call the Advanced Dermatology and Laser Institute of Seattle today at 206-402-4797 to schedule your consultation. What Can Dermal Fillers Do for You?

Dermal fillers are excellent for achieving a variety of results, including:

  • Plumping and shaping thin lips
  • Adding volume to the cheekbones or temples
  • Enhancing the chin
  • Smoothing nasolabial folds and lip lines
  • Reducing the appearance of dark circles under the eyes

Strategic use of fillers can help to create more youthful, harmonious facial features. Dr. Greene and our estheticians have extensive experience creating beautiful, natural results. We aim to enhance your natural features, not make you over into someone else.

We take particular care not to “overfill” any targeted area, and we work very closely with you to make sure you are happy with your results.

Types of Dermal Fillers We Offer

We offer many different types of fillers in order to target specific areas in the best way possible. Not all fillers are the same, so we take care to choose the ones that are best suited for your desired results. A softer, more malleable filler will be better for delicate, precise work such as filling under eye circles, while a firmer filler will be better for lifting the cheeks or sharpening the chin.

Dermal fillers that we offer include:

  • Juvederm
  • Restylane
  • Belotero Balance
  • Radiesse
  • Sculptra
  • Voluma

Each of these has their own benefits, and we will be happy to discuss which ones are best for you during your consultation.

What Is a Dermal Filler Procedure Like?

Dermal filler injections are not painful. You may experience some minor discomfort, but most patients find the procedure very tolerable. Depending on how many areas you are having treated, a dermal filler treatment can take anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes.

You may experience some minor side effects following treatment, such as:

  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Tenderness

These do not last long, though. Typically, any side effects clear up within a day or two. Lip injections may result in a longer period of swelling, but you can manage it with ice and keeping your head elevated. Any noticeable bruising can be covered with makeup.

Combining Dermal Fillers with Other Cosmetic Treatments

Dermal fillers can be combined with other treatments for a “liquid facelift” that turns the clock back on your appearance with no need for incisions or anesthesia. Popular procedures that patients like to combine with fillers include:

We’ll discuss your concerns in detail during your consultation, and come up with the best treatment plan to reach your goals.
